The history of baptisms dates back to times even before the birth of Jesus Christ. This is interesting as there are many people that believe that this only stated when John The Baptist arrived on earth to pave the way for Jesus Christ to come and save humanity. In truth, long before this, people were being dipped in water for the purposes of joining a cult. This action was symbolic of the death of an old life and the birth of a new life.

John the Baptist came to earth to pave the way for Jesus Christ and would spread the message of repenting from sin. He would then baptize people so that they would be washed clean of their sins. Jesus himself was baptized by John and this was done to fulfill the scriptures. Jesus was baptized even before he started to preach to the masses.

The Romans would be baptized when they were adults. It was believed that they were then older enough to understand the significance of this ceremony. Some people even elected to be baptized just before they died.

Many people believed that if this ceremony washed away sins, then it should be done just before leaving this world. It seemed pointless to be baptized and then sin after that and before dying. Emperor Constantine was only baptized while he was dying back in 337AD.

In the Middle Ages, people were concerned that they could die by accident and would not have time to be christened. It was at this time that this ceremony was carried out when people were babies. Now the people would feel assured that they would go to heaven after they died.

Today, different denominations have different ways to complete this ceremony. The history of baptisms has come a long way from those early days of christening people. Some churches do not baptize children until they are old enough to understand what they are doing.

The Middle Ages was a time where many people were very religious and many people spent much time praying. Many of the cathedrals were built during this time in Europe. Many of the most powerful people in that era were involved with the church. Religion began separating reality as it applied to people of that time. Many people believed in gods and would sacrifice many things to these gods on a daily basis. Children were taught about gods at schools and that meat was sacred to these gods. At that time, people started to learn more about conventional religion as it is known today.
