The Ego and the Id

The human brain is the most complex structure in the world. It controls all the conscious and unconscious functions of the human body, and is capable of the most intricate feats of reasoning and calculation. It weighs about three pounds and is a relatively fragile structure, which can very easily be damaged to blows to the head.

The brain is divided into different lobes, each playing a vital part, the lobes are sub-divided by fissures into many separate areas The depth of these fissures is such that the actual surface area of the brain is very great in comparison to its size.

Our mind is the brain, and the frontal lobes, the cortex is believed to play an important part in the higher intellectual functions. The mind, or the psyche, as it is often called, is again split into two. The Ego (self) is the outer organised part of the mind, responsible for all conscious thinking. The Id is the deep inner part of the psyche, which comprises instinctive impulses of the individual. It is also known as the unconscious part of the mind. All our "hunches" stem from the Id. We often have a strong feeling about something, but cannot offer a rational explanation. If it proves to be right, we simply offer it as a hunch, or feminine intuition. We never question ourselves why we "feel" certain things.

It is said that it is the Id that psychics tap into - the unconscious part of the mind. They are said to have been born with a deeper awareness of the Id, and spend years developing the awareness even more, hence that is why they are called psychics.

Because, as said, the brain is so complex, it is difficult to dispute whether they do have a gift, or are simply extra intuitive. Over the years, scholars have tried hard to disprove psychics. If they spent the same amount of time studying the Id, then maybe we would have some answers. To date, nothing has been proved or disproved, yet the fascination continues.

Whether we believe or disbelieve is unimportant, after all, all our thoughts come from the brain - the Ego!
