Having a baby is truly one of life's best moments. When a friend, family member or even an acquaintance is expecting a new addition to the family, chances are you will want to find something unique. Here are a few ideas for baby gifts that the proud parents are sure to appreciate.

Knowing whether the newcomer is a boy or a girl can be a help with picking out colors. Of course we have the obvious pink for girls and blue for boys. If you do not know, that is okay too. Pastel green, soft yellow, white and light beige are all acceptable for babies of either gender.

Perhaps the expecting parents are planning a theme when decorating their child's room. Find out about this as you can tailor your gift to fit right in. Or, if you are giving your gift early on, you may help the mom and dad come up with a theme if they had not really thought about it. Animals, alphabet, birds, candy and toys are examples of possible themes. Or the theme can be more of a concept, like 1950s, New England, southwest or outer space. Giving a cool gift may spark ideas for decoration and help set the gears in motion.

Other thoughts are to personalize the gift. Gifts given after the baby is born can have names, dates and even photos as part of the design. Think about monogramming blankets, inscribing the child's name on a rocking chair or rocking horse. A decorative plate or chalk board can include all the info like name, date and time of birth, weight and length. Adding the "proud parents" names is a nice touch.

Thinking a little outside the box could make your gift the most appreciated. Bed sheets, towels, even diapers may seem typical until you do something to personalize them. If you are a relative you may think about putting your own spin on the personalization. Instead of the infant's name, why not a bib that reads "I love my Aunt Judy."

If personalizing is not for you and you prefer to be more traditional, you can do so without being boring. Things that not everyone thinks to get include things to help soothe and calm babies like mobiles, music boxes and night lights.

Whatever baby gifts you do decide to get, make sure they are safe for the baby and that they will be useful to Mom and Dad. Things that will be in the crib like toys should have no small pieces or strings attached. Be careful of materials selected for blankets and try to find out what stuff has already been bought so you are not duplicating.
