Nottingham University has bilateral links with numerous educational establishments in China, as well as student exchange agreements with Fudan University, which is a member of the prestigious Universitas 21 group. Although many UK-based universities have close ties with their Chinese counterparts, Nottingham University stands out because it boasts the first Sino-foreign campus in China to be fully endorsed by the Chinese authorities. In addition, Nottingham University has recently signed an agreement with Fudan University that will lead to the establishment of the Confucius Institute in Nottingham, which will further Chinese culture in the UK.
Ties with Chinese Universities
The numerous links Nottingham University has created in recent years with Chinese universities, in areas such as law, technology, and the environment, has lead to an influx of Chinese students in Nottingham never seen before. Ten years ago, there were only 80 Chinese students in city; at present, that number has grown exponentially, the most recent studies showing that there are over 1,100 Chinese students in Nottingham. What's more, Nottingham University's School of Contemporary Chinese Studies, which was only recently established, has been steadily attracting more and more British and international students.
Besides many joint scholarship programmes or collaborations with Chinese universities, Nottingham University has also been working on creating and promoting a number of e-learning programmes, which will be available to both British and Chinese students. Another collaboration worth noting is that with Hunan University, the pinnacle of which is an acclaimed scholarship programme.
The Confucius Institute
The Memorandum of Understanding that Nottingham University has signed with Fudan University will enable it to establish a special centre for the promotion of Chinese studies and contemporary culture in the UK. The centre will be known as the Confucius Institute, and will be located in Nottingham. The Confucius Institute is expected to strengthen the ties between the two universities, as well the relation between the Chinese and British governments.
The University of Nottingham Ningbo Campus in China
As the first Sino-foreign higher education established in China to be endorsed by the Chinese authorities, the Nottingham University Ningbo is jointly managed by British and Chinese staff. The purpose of Nottingham University Ningbo is to provide high-quality education to Chinese students at much lower costs than those necessary when studying abroad. All programmes at the Ningbo Campus are in English while their format is exactly the same as that found in the UK.
Nottingham University Ningbo Campus is situated in the Ningbo Higher Education Park, a location specially built for it. There are over 4,700 students at the Ningbo Campus, the majority of which come from various Chinese provinces. Although there are many British teachers, the staff of the Ningbo Campus is international, its members coming from over 30 countries.
