London, the capital of England, is one of the most famous cities in the world, steeped in historical relevance and cultural diversity. As such it attracts millions of different visitors each and every year and, in order to cater for them and the millions of local residents, has an extensive network of underground tube lines and bus routes.
Travel in London can, unfortunately, be relatively expensive. This is particularly the case for those who are not used to the high cost of the British pound, which will certainly be the case for the majority of visitors. Thankfully, however, there are ways in which you can reduce your travel expenses within the city when using the underground.
First off, therefore, you should decide in advance where you are planning to go to. There are many landmarks to visit in the city, and you're most likely going to want to cover as many of these as possible during your stay. If you plan in advance where you are going then you will avoid doubling back and retreading previous routes that you have taken.
You need to get yourself an oyster card in order to save money. You can do this by visiting any underground tube station or local overground station within the vicinity. Getting an oyster card will cost you 3 pounds, but this will be fully refundable if you return the card intact. You can then add funds to the card which can be used for any route around the city on the tube line. Using the oyster card will help you to save a significant proportion of each fare.
Getting a London travel card is another option. You can purchase a travel card that will provide you with unlimited travel within certain zones of the city for one day, two days, and so on. If you plan to stay in the city for several days then it would usually be a good option to purchase one of these travel cards.
Remember to stay away from peak hours. Find out exactly what the peak hours are from a local travel representative, or by conducting online research. Using your oyster card, for example, off-peak will cost you significantly less than during peak hours. Also be aware that using the bus with your oyster card is generally cheaper than using the tube. In addition, using the bus will also provide you with the opportunity to see a little bit more for city when getting from A to B.
